Aims and Objectives
- Help students to develop the skills and attitudes needed for successful, independent, lifelong learning.
- Provide an opportunity for students to develop independent thinking and learning skills increasingly important in the world of work.
- Provide an opportunity to extend learning beyond the limits of the school day and to develop partnerships between teachers, students and parents/guardians.
- It also allows access to the curriculum for the parents and be more involved in learning methods being used by teachers.
- To identify the learning needs of individual students.
- To set appropriate student specific next step learning targets.
- To allow specific feedback to pupils that recognizes their individual progress and achievement and provides them with meaningful information which will allow them to progress in their learning.
- To modify and adapt the teaching and learning activities used in subsequent lessons in light of pupils’ learning needs.
- a) To build their confidence in what they know, understand and can do, encouraging and motivating them to achieve their full potential.
- b) To develop the skills which they need for reflective and independent study.
N.B Homework can be used as a tool for formative assessment
The homework marking policy is therefore an instrument through which both the teachers’ expectations and learners’ needs are met i.e. learners are motivated to work and teachers evaluate their teaching.
NB: Marking should be formative and comment-based. Comments should specify what is good about a piece of work and make suggestions about how the student can make progress. There is no requirement to include a grade for effort or attainment.
- Mark all work given as homework
- Ensure that marking is frequent;
- Mark in a colour clearly distinguishable from the student's own work;
- Mark in a way which sets an example of good presentation to the student;
- Keep a written record of the colour codes
- Provide opportunities for students to mark each other’s work;
- Provide opportunities for students to mark their own work; Ensure that marking takes account of Special Educational Needs;
- Allow time in lessons for following up on homework and corrections;
- Raise students’ awareness of the value of looking at teacher marking;
- Mark and return home work within a reasonable time period.
- Provide a quiet, suitable place where pupils can complete their homework.
- Show interest in work done or being done and look at exercise books and folders;
- Help students look at teachers’ marking and respond to it;
- Note any recurrent problems and let teachers know of them;
- Praise son/daughter for getting good marks but praise their effort not ability.
- Sign the planner each week to confirm that they are aware of homework set and have read any messages from teachers about non completion of homework or an unacceptable standard of homework
- Expect deadlines to be met, check that students are on track to meet them and help students organise their time if they are not.
- Date their work;
- Respond to their teacher’s marking;
- Make an effort to understand the meaning of marking
- Discuss any problems with subject teacher or parents to understand causes and find solution;

Presentation of work
All pieces of work done must:
- have a title, underlined with a ruler, at the top of the page
- have a date underlined
- have a left-hand margin for question numbers only
- have any errors crossed out with single horizontal line
- be neat, tidy and thorough
- have no rough work or graffiti on front and back inside
Covers of exercise books, as these are used for target setting
Work produced on a computer must also conform to certain conventions and students are asked to comply with the following:
- always put a title on your work
- always use a sensible font size and style
- save your work regularly; check print preview before you send your document to print
- your name should be in the header on the left hand side
- the date should be in the header on the right hand side
- your teacher’s name should be in the footer on the left hand side
- your subject should be in the footer on the right hand side
Amount of Homework
Concentrating on the intrinsic value of homework is more important than focusing on the precise amount of time spent on it.
However, it is suggested that the amount of time which should be spent by students on average should fall with the following ranges:-
Years 1 and 2: Twenty to thirty minutes a day
Years 3 and 4: thirty to forty minutes a day
Years 5 and 6: Forty to fifty minutes a day.
